Blue Cross Blue Shield Association’s Plan To Cover Uninsured in Individual Health Insurance
There’s a common misunderstanding about Blue Cross Blue Shield. Every Blue Cross and Blue Shield insurance company is an independent company. For example, BCBS of Texas and BCBS of Illinois are separate carriers.
But even though each of the Blues are independent, they are all members of one big family — the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association.

Californians who are seeking a health plan that is both affordable and provides coverage for routine services that can help them improve or maintain their health now have another option that could cost as little as $60 per month. Called SmartSense, the plan provides coverage for three physician office visits a year before having to meet a deductible; some preventive and diagnostic services and a choice of prescription drug coverage options. SmartSense offers a variety of deductibles starting at $500 and can provide protection against expensive and unexpected medial bills.

Starting a new job means signing up for benefits. In terms of health insurance, this has usually boiled down to choosing either an HMO or PPO plan for us. I still have never been offered the option of a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) with a Health Savings Account, even though I think it would be neat to have one.

Several people have asked me for some tips on how to find health insurance. I didn’t mean to scare anyone, but if my intense pain reminds someone to get insurance, at least something good came out of it! I did do some searching myself last year - the good news is that if you are young and in good health, you can get some high-deductible insurance for around $100 a month. The deductibles may still reach in the thousands, but $5,000 would be the least of your worries if you had just one serious incident. A reader got billed $3,075 for each CT scan taken!

As healthcare costs and health insurance premiums continue to increase, more and more Americans seem to be choosing to go without rather than include a health insurance plan in their expenses. Frankly, this worries me, because going without health insurance is actually a lot like putting on a fireworks show while you're pumping gas - you're likely to get badly burned.

There's been a lot of talk about how bad our healthcare system is in the United States, and how far behind other nations we are in terms of ensuring that every single American has adequate healthcare coverage. But how does our healthcare actually compare to that of other countries? As a recent expatriate (I just moved to the United Kingdom for a period of several years), I decided to give a personal view of the differences I've encountered between the systems in place in the United States and the British system. This is just one young woman's opinion about how our health services compare.
